Profiler Program
The UCPRC hosts the Caltrans Inertial Profiler Certification Program, delivering certification services for both operators and equipment in accordance with industry standards. Located at a dedicated Sacramento test site, the center verifies profiler calibration to ensure accurate pavement smoothness data (IRI) essential for quality assurance and compliance with smoothness specifications. Services include annual equipment calibration, operator practical and written examinations, and issuance of certification that meets California Test 387 criteria. Through this program, the UCPRC supports transportation agencies and contractors by ensuring measurement precision, enhancing roadway quality monitoring, and maintaining high standards for profiling practices.
Falling Weight Deflectometer Calibration Center
UCPRC operates an FWD Calibration Center certified by AASHTO Re:Source. To view UCPRC’s current certification status, please visit Certified FWD Calibration Center Operators. FWD load cells and deflection sensors are calibrated following AASHTO R32-20.
To schedule a calibration visit, please:
Fill out the Pre-Calibration Checklist and UC Davis Campus Waiver form (see links below).
Send the signed PDFs via email to fwd-calibration@ucdavis.edu.
UCPRC will reply to your email within two business days. If you have any questions about the forms or the calibration process in general, please send an email to fwd-calibration@ucdavis.edu.
In addition to the information listed in the pre-calibration checklist, please verify that the FWD machine’s sensor's absolute and relative gains from the previous calibration are correct and accurate, especially if a new deflection sensor or load cell has been installed in the FWD since the machine’s previous calibration.

Day of Calibration Instructions
Arrive at the ATIRC facilities by 8 a.m. Upon arrival, FWD Operators must check in with Brielle Moreno and/or Julian Brotschi, who will be stationed inside the FWD Calibration Center. You can contact either directly:
- Brielle Moreno: (831) 726-6167 (bammoreno@ucdavis.edu)
- Julian Brotschi: (530) 220-4024 (jcbrotschi@ucdavis.edu)
Please bring a check in the amount of $750. Make the check payable to: The Regents of the University of California (or UC Davis).
Credit cards are not accepted for payment.
The $750 covers the cost for one FWD machine in an eight-hour calibration period. If any additional time is required (a second day of calibration), there will be an additional $750 charge. The FWD Operator will receive a paper receipt of payment. After the initial check-in, FWD Operators are permitted to use the Outer Test Track to warm up their machine.
After warm-up, FWD Operators return to the FWD Center to begin the calibration procedure.
In the event the FWD equipment fails to pass calibration after two attempts by the UCPRC Calibration Technician, the FWD Operator agrees to forfeit all additional calibration attempts during the same calibration day. The FWD Operator must reschedule a future date to calibrate the machine and pay an additional $750 charge.
UCPRC is not responsible for training, servicing, maintenance, or bringing FWD equipment into compliance. FWD operators must be familiar with their equipment and have all spare parts required to perform any maintenance or repairs while onsite at the UCPRC facility. This includes, but is not limited to, tools, battery chargers, extension cords, and any other machine-specific equipment required to calibrate the FWD deflection sensors or load cell by AASHTO R32-20.
