The UCPRC works on the pavement management system used for decision support in managing the Caltrans pavement network. This includes improving data and models, enhancing the use of results in decision support, and applying the information in life-cycle cost analysis.
Current projects
Partnered Pavement Research Center (PPRC) Support Projects:
Sub-task: Preliminary Assessment of Effects of Truck Gross Weight Limit Increases on Pavement Life and Cost (SPE 2.09)
Objective: Support for the Partnered Pavement Research Center (PPRC), including providing advice to state government on pavement technology; operating falling weight deflectometer (FWD) and inertial profiler calibration centers on behalf of Caltrans; and advanced pavement research for long-term future needs.
Project Manager: David Jones
Sponsor: Caltrans Division of Maintenance
Task Order: TO-003
(Also Asphalt pavements and Concrete pavements)
Partnered Pavement Research Center (PPRC) Implementation Projects:
Sub-task: Provide support for the pavement management system (known as PaveM) (SPE 2.10)
Sub-task: Provide support for life-cycle cost assessment (known as RealCost-CA) (SPE 2.14)
Objective: Assist Caltrans with implementation projects, including providing support for the pavement management system (PaveM); flexible pavement design (CalME); rigid pavement design (Pavement ME); environmental life-cycle assessment (eLCAP); life-cycle cost assessment (RealCost-CA); and monitor pilot projects of new rigid paving technologies.
Project Manager: Jeremy Lea
Sponsor: Caltrans Division of Maintenance
Task Order: TO-017
(Also Asphalt pavements, Concrete pavements, and Sustainability in pavements)
Tri-Annual Performance Model Update (SPE: 3.63)
Objective: Continue building a historical database of performance data for the California State Highway System and develop various performance models from the database.
Project Manager: Jeremy Lea
Sponsor: Caltrans
Task Order: TO-012
Updates and Improvements to Web-Based RealCost-CA (SPE: 3.64)
Objective: Continue updating Caltrans’ Life Cycle Cost Analysis (LCCA) Procedure Manual and improving the LCCA tool, RealCost-CA, to focus on some key areas.
Project Manager: Changmo Kim
Sponsor: Caltrans
Task Order: TO-013
Scoping Study for Next Generation Pavement Management System (PMS) (SPE: 3.65)
Objective: Start an investigation into a new Pavement Management System (PMS) architecture based on modern computer architectures.
Project Manager: Jeremy Lea
Sponsor: Caltrans
Task Order: TO-014
Advanced Image Analysis of Automated Pavement Condition Survey (APCS) Data (SPE: 4.96)
Objective: Continue work on using deep learning to extract information from roadway images collected as part of the Automated Pavement Condition Survey (APCS).
