About Us

Who We Are

The University of California Pavement Research Center (UCPRC), with facilities at UC Davis and UC Berkeley, is a nationally recognized leader in pavement research and innovation. With roots dating back to 1948, we primarily partner with the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) and its industry collaborators, and also support the FHWA, FAA, and other agencies, with results that directly inform real-world decisions and improvements in practice.

Our Mission

UCPRC aims to improve the cost-effectiveness of transportation infrastructure while reducing environmental impacts and the use of finite resources. Our research spans the full innovation arc—from conceptual studies and lab testing to field trials and statewide implementation in standard practice.

What We Do

From full-scale pavement testing and new materials design to life-cycle approaches that improve performance and sustainability, UCPRC’s work provides the knowledge and tools needed to build longer-lasting, more cost-effective, and environmentally responsible transportation infrastructure.

Programs and Partnerships

Through UCPRC's long and productive partnership with Caltrans, we support innovation, sustainability, and performance improvement across the state's highway system. To learn more about our work for Caltrans, read our annual reports:
2022-2023 Annual Report
2021-2022 Annual Report
2020-2021 Annual Report

We also lead multiple research initiatives in partnership with our affiliated programs focused on improving pavement performance and sustainability. In 2018, we established the City and County Pavement Improvement Center (CCPIC) to assist local agencies in adopting best practices and cost-effective pavement management strategies. Learn more at the CCPIC website.

Our Lab2Slab2Practice initiative accelerates the movement of new materials and methods for durable and innovative concrete from laboratory research to full-scale field demonstrations and standard practice. Learn more at the Lab2Slab website

Through our FHWA Cooperative Agreement, we lead the Sustainable Pavement Program, supporting the national effort to improve pavement resilience and sustainability. Learn more at the Sustainable Pavement Program Cooperative Center website.
