Undergraduate Student Opportunities

Join the UCPRC as a UC Davis undergraduate student

The UC Pavement Research Center is seeking motivated, hard-working undergraduate students for research assistant positions in our ATIRC materials testing laboratory, heavy vehicle simulator track, and pavement management system group. The responsibilities include:

  • General Laboratory: Under supervision, perform sampling, specimen preparation, and testing of pavement-related materials, including aggregates, asphalt binder, asphalt concrete, portland cement concrete, alternative low-carbon cements, field recycled aggregates, and soil. This role also involves general lab support, equipment maintenance, and data analysis. Evening and weekend work may be required, along with potential travel to field sites and study projects.

  • Heavy Vehicle Simulator (HVS): Monitor current full-scale accelerated pavement tests at our ATIRC track, collect temperature data, and log observations. Provide labor support to engineers and main operators as needed. Evening and weekend work will be included.

  • State Quality Assurance Testing and Specification Development: Work on long-life asphalt pavements, in-place recycled (CR) pilot projects, and various high-recycle content and alternative material projects aimed at implementing lower carbon, more sustainable pavements.

  • Pavement Management Systems: Under supervision, support automated pavement data collection, evaluation, and design tools.

All undergraduate staff are expected to work 10-19.5 hours/week during the academic year and 20-40 hours/week during the summer. Positions are reviewed each quarter, with renewals based on job performance and project needs. Students hired in the fall are expected to work through the academic year, contingent on individual performance. Eligibility requires current enrollment as a UC Davis undergraduate student, with salaries ranging from $16.00 to $19.50/hour.

These positions are highly rewarding, and nearly all of the UCPRC's undergraduate alumni have secured full-time employment within industry, agency roles, internally at UCPRC, or have continued their education in related or unrelated fields.
